This platter does stretch and test the boundaries of clay. A large piece of clay is thrown in a disk on the potter's wheel, finger marks are applied, and the it is cut off of the wheel head. I then stretch and toss the cylinder into a long oval and apply curves to the edges. The handles seem to complete the shape and serve in the function as well. A bold red glaze is then applied.
